Azienda Agricola COS Maldafrica 2013
With a deep, inky red-purple hue, the full-bodied '13 Maldafrica shows lots of black cherry, a dusting of sweet spice and silky tannins, while striking a balance between acidity and minerality that keeps the wine grounded in its Sicilian terroir. COS makes its Maldafrica from the oldest vines on the property. A blend of 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot and the remainder Nero d'Avola, the grapes are harvested by hand in two separate runs in order to obtain optimal ripeness. Fermentation occurs with wild yeasts in concrete tanks; then it's placed in 300-liter old barrels for twelve months and is bottled without filtration, where it spends an additional six months in the bottle before release. COS makes fewer than 600 cases of Maldafrica a year.
