The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Aux Combottes 1er Cru includes around 30% whole bunch and is matured in 20% new oak. This has a reserved but detailed bouquet, not as charming as Arlaud’s Chambolles but conveying a wonderful sense of mineralité. The palate is very detailed, with fine tannins that frame the layers of black cherry and raspberry fruit, and segues into a slightly peppery, very harmonious finish. This is wonderfully composed. Here there is no reduction to the surprisingly high-toned aromas of red currant, black cherry and whiffs of herbal tea and rose petal. There is once again a really lovely texture to the round, plush and delicious medium-bodied flavors that culminate in a compact and firm finish that flashes a touch of edginess though markedly less so than the Sentiers.
