F.X. Pichler Ried Steinertal Smaragd Gruner Veltliner 2016

One of the coolest single vineyards in Loiben, the Steinertal site is located on the eastern end of Wachau, between the Loibenberg and Pfaffenberg sites. It is a small valley section composed of a deeply deposited, weathered gneiss soil. The resulting wine shows off aromas and flavors of vineyard peaches and impresses by its raciness and finesse. It is succulent and displays high drinkability, and is most distinctly characterized by the minerality of the primitive rock soil, which suggests a long future for these 70 year old vines Grüner Veltliner.
95 points, Wine Enthusiast: Juicy, ripe pear notions and bright Mandarin accents swirl enticingly on the nose of this wine. They dominate the streamlined, brisk palate for now, but underneath, the savory, herbal and intriguing saltiness of Grüner Veltliner shimmers. Along with sage, thyme and miso flavors, they make their full, satisfying appearance on the dry finish. This has both charm and depth. Drink 2020–2030.
